Jane Gray of the Tour de Madison organizing committee, and Bob Leftwich from the Bike Stop in Culpeper pose with a few of the bike tubes Bob has collected for the Green Guru tube recycling program at this year’s 25th Annual Tour de Madison. The bike tubes, which would normally end up in a landfill, will be boxed and shipped to the folks at Green Guru in Boulder, CO, to be re-made into products such as wallets, messenger bags, computer bags and other items.

Courtney Hollow Band will be playing for our first Music on the Lawn on June 14, 2012 at 6:30 pm. Bring your lawn chairs and/or blankets and join us for free music on the Madison County Library Lawn on North Main Street in the Town of Madison, Virginia.

We’ve heard from Graves Mountain Lodge that camping will be available across the road from the lodge for $5/night per person, with shower facilities available.  Call the Lodge for details:  540-923-4231.

There will also be a keg or two of Yeungling available post ride…in case anyone happens to be thirsty….

A note about the Family Ride:  The Family Ride can be as short or as long as you want and is on flat or gently rising and falling roads around the starting point in Syria.  Family Riders can begin by accompanying the 40 mile and metric century riders down to Banco, before turning around and heading back toward Syria. Then riders have the option of going up Quaker Run Rd. as far as they’d like and turning around, or going up Bohannan Rd. to Weakley Hollow Rd and up as far toward the White Oak Canyon parking lot as they want before turning around.

Planning is in full swing for the 25th Annual Tour de Madison bike ride scheduled for May 19.   The planning committee has been working hard to make this milestone year a special one.  In addition to the commemorative jerseys, the event this year will feature a post-ride meal at Graves’ Mountain Lodge.    At the conclusion, riders will be serenaded by prominent local musicians  Scuffletown and the Dark Hollow Bluegrass Band.

The first Tour de Madison was held in 1988 when Peter Rice gathered a few of his friends for a day of cycling around the county.  Now the event attracts over three hundred cyclists from up and down the east coast to Madison County each year.
